I've had my iphone for about 4 months now. While there are many things I really dislike about the iphone, I've kept quiet since the pros have outweighed the cons. Not until today... After driving for about an hour going to an address I bookmarked in the GPS, my phone decided to drop signal. About 5 mins later it recovered signal, but without a data connection. GPS on the iphone is worthless without a data connection. So I decided to reboot the phone in hopes of getting the data connection back. Upon reboot, the phone decided I was no longer authorized to use it and needed to re-link via itunes.. f**king itunes... I'm an hour away from home without the address I'm going to and without the ability to make a phone call - except to 911. So what now? See if I have any quarters and look for a payphone? Never needed to do that over 3+ years using a smartphone.

Do I now need to keep a back-up phone in case the iphone decides to re-lock itself again? WTF. Apple needs to get their act together. Unfortunately, the buzz around the iphone is so big, I think they will continue to get away with unnecessarily crippled hardware and shoddy firmware. Before I purchased my iphone, I thought Apple had a reputation of having rock solid operating systems and being more open-minded than MS. Their geniuses at marketing, no doubt. Fooled me. Truth is Microsoft's Windows Mobile OS is way more solid and they don't purposely crippled hardware all in the name of DRM and whatever other reasons...

Having a cell phone lock itself up for no reason is 100% unacceptable. I am now one seriously po'ed Apple customer.

If you want SatNav don't buy an iPhone. Most phones lock up occasionally. If you don't like it I'll take it off your hands for a small fee...

I think I've had my 2g/3g iPhones lock up twice in the little over a year i've had them. Less than any other handset I've ever owned, that's for sure.

To lock up is one thing but to then make the phone unusable until you reconnect it to your pc is another matter.

As for Apple marketing and general PR they are world leaders, how often do you hear about a MAC virus? hardly ever but according to a security consultant I know since the launch of XP and then Vista the PC actually has less attacks than the MAC.

That happened to me oddly enough. I was flying to the U.S, had the iphone on Airplane mode, playing some of the games, one of them crashed. The known thing to do with Apps from the AppStore crashing is to reboot. I did, and it came up with the same "please activate using iTunes" logo. I was p*****d off too. Another 6 hours flight left, and no phone when I got there. Admittedly, I did swap the official "02 iphone tariff" SIM to a PAYG one before I took off, so it could've been that.

Fortunately, a little later I tried another reboot and it booted properly that time. Needless to say, I avoided another reboot during my stay in U.S, but you're not alone here. It happened to you, it happened to me and could happen to other iPhone users.

2.2.1 Update is out now, so who knows if this little intermittent issue is fixed or not, only time will tell, and lets just hope we're not in one of those dire emergency situations when it does happen

The only noticable differnce with 2.2.1 is that it stops YellowSn0w working...

I'll stick with 2.2 smile.gif

Not entirely true, it noticeably improves Safari stability (which I can vouch for) and cures a photo/email resizing issue too.

The main motivation may be to block the latest hack, but these patches do always have a few other fixes in them too.

I've never had a problem with safari and very rarely get pics emailed that I need on the phone.
For me there are not enough benefits to be bothered with it.
YMMV
